The New Jersey native broke big in 2009 when she appeared in both JJ Abrams' reboot and James Cameron's Avatar in the space of a few months but she's established herself further into the pop culture landscape five years later with her role as Gamora, assassin-turned-Guardian of the Galaxy, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Saldana has played the character multiple times since her debut in 2014 but there's one performance that stands above the rest, in one of the franchise's best films - the first chapter of the Avengers' climactic two-parter in 2018.

Though she has lass action than many of her teammates, she proves very much the emotional throughline of the film - and the twists and turns in her character development helped raise the film's genuine stakes of all-or-nothing jeporady.
