It won't be too surprising that the Discovery commander's best outings on the big screen have come under the direction of Guillermo del Toro, having collaborated with the Mexican auteur on multiple projects throughout their careers, including Pan's Labyrinth, Crimson Peak and the Hellboy franchise.

But it was the filmmaker's Oscar-winning triumph The Shape of Water that arguably stands out as the best of the pair's works together, with Jones effectively playing one of the most unorthodox romantic leads of all time as "the Amphibian Man" in this Cold War set fantasy effort.

Surely destined to become a future classic in the cinephile canon, it's an unexpected, ravishingly appointed affair that plays like a throwback to old Hollywood in its own mysterious way - and it may probably endure as the peak of the actor's career onscreen in a top-line role.
