Despite how effective The Thing's ambiguity is, uncertain endings don't always have to be dark and horrific. Sometimes, they can actually be quite funny, as is the case with the final line and parting shot offered by the 1969 heist classic The Italian Job.

After stealing millions of pounds worth of gold and evading capture from the authorities during an epic, exciting chase through the streets of Italy, Charlie Crocker and his team of thieves rendezvous in the Alps, and it looks like their coach is going to get away with both them and the gold intact.

But in a glorious twist, the coach almost falls off the side of the cliff and hangs precariously over the edge, with Crocker left inside desperately trying to reach the gold. Though the situation is pretty much impossible to escape from, Crocker confidently says:

“Hang on a minute, lads. I’ve got a great idea.”

With that, the credits roll and the thieves' fates are left unresolved. It's nothing short of comedy genius, really, ending on a literal cliffhanger with hysterical results.
