Rik Mayall is one of the more interesting cases among the Harry Potter series. He played Peeves the Poltergeist, a pretty big character in the books, often used for comedic effect or to antagonize Harry and friends - only he didn't play Peeves, because all his scenes were cut from the first movie, and the character was written out after that. Why? According to director Christopher Columbus, they weren't happy with the design of Peeves. There were talks of updating it and including his parts in a DVD release, but this wasn't done for the initial DVDs.
The reason he was cut is that none of us were happy with the design. David and I looked at the design of Peeves and thought, We can get it better. So we shot the sequence but we won't have it ready for the initial release of the DVD. We'll try and get it out for maybe a year and a half, two years, from now.
Mayall died June 9th, 2014 after returning home from a run. Although his autopsy was inconclusive, it appeared to be a heart-related issue. Mayall is a British comedy icon, creating both The Young Ones and Bottom, as well as starring as the title character in Drop Dead Fred.
