15 Horror Movies You Probably Didn't Know Were Based On Books
7. Perfect Blue
In the world of anime horror, Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue is at the top of the game. It's one of those movies that is so surreal that it becomes almost mesmerizing, trapping the viewer in a world where nothing, not even their own perception, can be trusted.
Like the directors final film, Paprika, the beginnings of this classic can be traced back to an early nineties novel. Kon's masterpiece of madness finds itself originating from Yoshikazu Takeuchi's 1991 book of the same name. The plot centers on Mima, a pop star attempting to take her stardom to the next level by entering the film industry. As she moves deeper into this new world, she, and in turn the audience, fall further and further down a rabbit hole of unfiltered insanity.
Perfect Blue has been talked about to death over the years, and deservedly so. With that being said, something interesting about it not often mentioned isn't even about the movie itself. Just four years after directing this hypnotically horrifying nightmare, Kon put out the beautiful and heartfelt Millennium Actress, showing a genre versatility that would be the envy of any storyteller. A master if there ever was one.
Rest in peace legend.
