15 Horror Movies You Probably Didn't Know Were Based On Books
8. Audition
Many horror fans consider Takashi Miike's 1999 Audition is one of the most intense and unnerving horror films of all time, and for good reason. Though, what people might not know is that its madness spawned from Ryu Murakami's 1997 book of the same name.
Audition tells the story of a widower named Aoyama who, from pressure from his teenage son, decides to start dating again. Instead of going about it like a normal person however, he has a producer friend organize a fake film audition to find the right woman. Unbeknownst to him, this unorthodox and borderline unethical decision will haunt him for the rest of his days.
As gut-wrenching and sadistic as Murakami's book may be, absolutely nothing can compare to how truly traumatizing the sound from the movie of piano wire cutting through a man's feet is. That's just something you don't forget no matter how hard you may try. Though both versions will still leave you at least a little bit scarred.
