15 Huge Controversies That Rocked Star Wars
7. #BoycottStarWarsVII
Sometimes, actual fan movements sound like jokes imagined by biting satire shows like Brass Eye. Take for example the Ghostbusters fan fury about daring to cast female actors in the lead roles. How despicable to reflect half of the population of the world!
The same sort of buffoonery was inspired around The Force Awakens, when an army of racist trolls took offence to what they perceived as the film's "white genocide". They armed themselves in the way they always do - with a viral hashtag (#BoycottStarWarsVII) - and the ludicrous logic that John Boyega and Oscar Isaac playing leads was somehow a bad thing.
That of course ignored the presence of several notable actors of colour appearing throughout the Star Wars franchise, because that would have been devastating to their "cool" anti-PC accusations. And at least the weight of the fanbase came out against the hashtag movement.
