15 Huge Controversies That Rocked Star Wars
15. Where's Rey?
Given that she was the main character in The Force Awakens, you'd have thought that Rey would be the primary focus when it came to the merchandise released around the film. After all, if LucasFilm were seeking to engage young female fans by giving them a hero of their own to cherish, they'd surely then take the opportunity to convert those fans into merch buyers too?
Nope.
Fundamentally fudging George Lucas' genius merchandising approach (literally, sell EVERYTHING), Disney and their partners offered mysteriously few toys in her image. HASBRO initially claimed that was to preserve story elements (precisely none of which would have ruined anything), but then it turned out that toymakers were specifically told to exclude Rey because Star Wars toys are geared towards boys and boys don't like playing with female action-figures.
Altogether now: BULLSH*T!
Rey toys did subsequently come out (and wouldn't you know it boys bought them and played with them), but the conscious decision to apparently hold back the toys caused needless scandal.
