Release Date: October 16 (US), November 27 (UK) The Hype: A Cold War thriller starring Tom Hanks as a lawyer recruited by the CIA to negotiate the release of a pilot captured in the Soviet Union, with Steven Spielberg directing. the Coen Brothers writing, Thomas Newman (American Beauty, WALL-E) scoring and the director's regular DP Janusz KamiĀski (Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan) handling cinematography. What else needs to be said? Oh, and the rest of the cast includes Alan Alda, Amy Ryan, Mark Rylance, Domenick Lombardozzi and Sebastian Koch. It'll be a struggle to find another film this year overloaded with this much veteran talent. How Well Will It Do?: Spielberg is an absurdly consistent filmmaker with only three critical misses to his name, none of which are even terrible films (The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Hook and 1941), so the odds are massively in his favour here for another hit. It'll almost certainly do well financially with Hanks leading the charge, all the more so if the awards hype maintains momentum, of which there's sure to be plenty. Will Thomas Newman, who has been nominated for 12 Oscars without a win, finally scoop the award? This could be the year. In short, there's no reason to expect anything less than another reliably entertaining, taut period pic from Spielberg.
