5. Berlin Syndrome

Berlin Syndrome Teresa Palmer
Entertainment One

The latest film from acclaimed director Cate Shortland (Somersault, Lore) is an intense horror-thriller revolving around a young woman (Teresa Palmer) travelling in Berlin, who after a one-night stand finds her partner (Max Riemelt) refusing to let her leave.

Though the premise might sound relatively played-out, the execution is anything but, with Shortland probing deep into the psychology of the captor-captive scenario, which is elevated substantially by Palmer's committed performance, easily the best of her career to date.

It goes to some deeply discomforting places, as it should, and just when it seems like it's going to begin adhering to genre formula, a fascinating new wrinkle is typically introduced. A cult classic in the making for sure.
