15 Insane Shocks & Snubs From 2015 Oscar Nominations

13. Shock: Interstellar Nominated For Best Sound Mixing

Though few were expecting big things for Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, it nevertheless racked up five nominations in technical categories, yet the one that sticks out like a sore thumb is the nod for Best Sound Mixing. It's a shock considering the widespread controversy about the movie's sound mix in and around its release, that Hans Zimmer's score was so bombastically edited into the film that it often drowned out the dialogue. That the branch of sound mixers would overlook this is, frankly, quite shocking. Nolan has defended the mix, declaring that it was intentional to replicate the feeling of disorientation and confusion that the characters feel, though frankly, this just feels like an excuse and not something that strong direction and a smart script needs to bombard viewers with. The mixing branch, however, incredulously seemed to love the film's approach.
