15 Insane Shocks & Snubs From 2015 Oscar Nominations
9. Snub: The Lego Movie For Best Animated Film
And this is it, the snub that had pretty much every self-respecting film fan completely up in arms, that AMPAS didn't nominate The Lego Movie for Best Animated Film. The movie holds 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and is generally considered one of 2014's big surprises, but that didn't stop it being snubbed in favour of 5 films that lack the same level of popularity and critical acclaim: Big Hero 6 (88%), The Boxtrolls (74%), How to Train Your Dragon 2 (92%) and indie flicks Song of the Sea (96%, albeit with far less reviews) and The Tale of Princess Kaguya (100%, again with less reviews). The explanation seems relatively obvious, though: why would the Academy, largely comprised of 60-plus-year-old men, want to nominate a movie about Lego, packed with pop-culture references they probably don't understand? Plus, the abundance of live-action in the final 15 minutes probably hugely hurt their chances too. Still, no snub or shock this year has been as infuriating as this. Again, it just reminds how out of touch AMPAS can show themselves to be.
