15 Mind-Blowing Facts You Didn't Know About Hamilton: An American Musical

3. The Writing Process

The writing process for what was originally Miranda's perceived mixtape was very clever. Basically, he would sit at home playing random tunes on his piano until he found something he liked. He'd record the tune, loop it, and put his headphones on. With that done, he would go for long walks, listening to the melody he'd created, and forming lyrics as he travelled.

A clear example of just how into the writing process Miranda got can be found in an anecdote he gave about the making of the song "Wait for It", which was performed on Broadway by Leslie Odom Jr. It's a song Miranda claims is one of his personal favourites, and he wrote it on the subway whilst travelling to a friend's birthday party. En route, he thought up a melody, hummed it into his phone, and ended up staying at the party for only 15 minutes because he didn't want to lose his focus.

On the way back home, listening to the melody, he came up with the rest of the song. That's a pretty good day's work.
