15 Mind-Blowing Facts You Didn't Know About Hamilton: An American Musical
9. The Schuyler Sisters... And Brothers?
Although we only get to see Angelica, Eliza and Peggy in the show itself (and kudos if you sang their names as you read them), the Schuyler family was actually much larger in real life. In truth, there were 14 Schuyler siblings, eight of whom survived into adulthood and four of whom were brothers.
Now, Angelica, Eliza and Peggy were great, bringing to life some brilliant songs, all with great voices and some of the best personalities in the show. So why miss out the other siblings? Simple: story-telling. Miranda wrote the sisters to represent all the Schuylers, to keep the narrative concise and flowing.
There are of course some other narrative leaps: Angelica needing "to many rich" because her father had no sons was put in place to show the audience the kind of relationship the sisters had; and although Alexander and Eliza were portrayed having met at the ball in "Helpless", they actually met two years before that ball ever happened.
It's clear why Miranda did it all this way, and the show doesn't suffer from it. In fact, the slight deviation from the facts make the whole thing more stream-lined and easy to follow, and it's nice to see the sisters' stories get told with such respect and passion.
