15 Mind-Blowing Facts You Didn't Know About Hamilton: An American Musical
8. Some Historical Leniency
Not everything is perfectly accurate in Hamilton. As with all biopics, some liberties have been taken to make the narrative more effective and the whole thing a respectable length. If every part of Hamilton's story was included, then the play would have run for too long and risked because stale. Hard to imagine, but it's true.
Some of the liberties are quite small - like the Schuyler Sister arc - and some are simply things skipped over or barely mentioned. For example, the real Hamilton wasn't quite as concerned with slavery as Miranda had him portrayed. Whilst some historians have stated that he was against it as an institution, he never actively pursued an end to slavery during his political career. Given his career and skill with money, it's argued that he didn't concern himself with the institution because he didn't want to disturb the economy, of which slavery was a large part.
Another liberty taken is the way that Alexander meet Lafayette, Hercules Mulligan (Okieriete Onaodowan) and John Laurens (Anthony Ramos). Although he met Laurens around the time the show suggests, Alexander actually met Mulligan years earlier when he first arrived in the 'States, and the two briefly lived together. He didn't cross paths with Lafayette, either, until about two years into the war.
That said, they were actually close in real life, and the show does justice to the way Hamilton interacted with them. You know, only with rap.
