7. Thorin Vs. Azog - The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies
Who Dies?: Azog and Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). Method of Death: Stabbed (by each other). Why It's Awesome: As underwhelming as much of the final Hobbit movie was, the climactic showdown between Azog and Thorin certainly delivered. The slug-fest takes place on the ice, and initially, it seems that Thorin has taken care of Azog by causing him to fall into the freezing water beneath them. However, Azog tricks Thorin, stabbing him in the foot and emerging from his apparently watery grave, as the fight continues. Thorin eventually realises that Azog is too strong for him and allows the Orc to impale him, giving him a quick opportunity to impale him back. Azog dies and a mortally wounded Thorin glances back to the continuing battle just as Bilbo (Martin Freeman) shows up. Thorin makes peace with Bilbo for all of their animosity throughout the film, and the rest of the Dwarves mourn their fallen King. Even cynics of Peter Jackson's bloated franchise will struggle to argue with the effectiveness of this scene.
