Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines) seemed destined for Oscar glory with this regal adaptation of M. L. Stedman's acclaimed 2012 novel.

Despite a magnificent cast including Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Rachel Weisz, this is a tough one to sit through because, for all of its gorgeous visuals and strong acting, the pacing is brutally slow.

It's also exceedingly melodramatic to the point that it's off-putting, and by the time the fifth emotional breakdown takes place, you may find yourself laughing rather than crying.

Also, the two lead characters are unpleasant and the film doesn't seem to acknowledge this anywhere near enough.

In short, only bother with it if you're huge fans of the talents involved. And don't watch it at night, because there's a good chance you'll just nod off.
