12. Brahms: The Boy II - February 21

The Boy
STX Entertainment

The Boy is one of the silliest, most asinine and somehow enjoyable horror films of the 2010s. It is built around a twist that makes absolutely zero sense. It has jump scares that are based around a doll moving its head off screen. It has exceptionally committed acting from Lauren Cohan who brings sincere gravitas to the role of the nanny tasked with taking care of a seemingly possessed doll. It's not a film that takes itself seriously, nor does it cross the line into becoming pure pastiche. It is the perfect middle ground, a film that doesn't necessarily inspire scares or intentional laughs but that is an extremely good time to watch with a crowd.

The prospect of the sequel (which has been sadly under-promoted in the UK so far) that raises the stakes of the not-so-possessed doll with its wonky title and expanded area of attack should be one of the highlights of the month if you can vibe with its perculiar wavelengths. It looks to be more of the same, with Katie Holmes taking the basic role of Lauren Cohan's previous protagonist, with the addition of a child of her own that she has to protect from Brahms.

Who knows, this could be a definitively groundbreaking horror sequel, none of us have seen it yet. Maybe it’ll be the sequel that ignites a fever for The Boy worldwide, cementing Brahms as an overwhelming presence in genre iconography. Even if that reality doesn’t manifest, it should be a good time in one sense or another.
