The critics may not have loved the live-action Lion King, but it made $536.8 million in its first ten days globally (against a projection of $450m), so it's obvious that audiences didn't agree. And while the biggest complaint seems to have been a lack of originality, this will do nothing to dissuade Disney from making more remakes.

As well as updates on The Little Mermaid's casting tis year, we've already had confirmation of a live-action remake of The Hunchback Of Notre Dame too. It's not entirely unexpected, as it falls right in the middle of the time period Disney seem to be focusing on to remake their movies from, but that doesn't mean it's not a Lovely idea.

Best of all, both Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz are back writing new music for it and Tony-winning M. Butterfly playwright David Henry Hwang is writing the script.
