What Everyone Expected: Ronny (Vince Vaughn) deals with a huge dilemma after catching his buddy Nick's (Kevin James) wife Geneva (Winona Ryder) cheating. Boy, what sort of dilemma could there possibly be for Ronny not to tell Nick? Sounds juicy. What Actually Happened: And that's exactly the problem with Ron Howard's wildly inept comedy: there's no dilemma in the central situation. Any half-good friend would rat out the cheating partner to their buddy, but instead, this movie spends two hours contriving ridiculous situations for why Ronny can't just spill the beans: he doesn't want to add further stress to an already anxiety-ridden Nick, then Geneva promises it's over, then Geneva threatens to lie about Ronny making a pass at her, and so on and so on, dragging things out to feature length. This entire movie could just not exist had Ronny done what any regular person would've and had a conversation with his supposed friend over a few beers. Instead, audiences are subjected to a movie which simply doesn't reflect any relatable human behaviour whatosever. Terrible. What It Should Have Been Called: Invasion of the Body Snatchers, because everyone in the movie acts like a pod person, a senseless automaton.
