Of the Affleck brothers, Casey is by far the better actor thats no slight on Ben, but theres simply no competition. Casey Affleck is that rare thing, an actor who seems to be able to play any role and be utterly convincing and compelling in each. Thats appropriate, in the case of the protagonist of The Killer Inside Me: because Sheriff Lou Ford has been playing the role of Sheriff Lou Ford for so long that hes got it down to an art form. In reality, Ford isnt the amiable, slightly slow local lawman he appears to be to the residents of the small, sleepy Texas town he serves. Hes a violent sociopath, intelligent, sadistic and sexually deviant but the mask is slipping. Hes losing control, and time is finally running out for him. Its a tour de force in a film full of fantastic performances. Afflecks Ford is by turns snakelike, brutal, charming and sweet, depending on which face hes presenting at any given time. Its the two long, drawn out beating scenes that chill the blood most though whether were watching him agonizingly rearrange Jessica Albas face or punch and kick Kate Hudson to death, we know were witnessing a screen madman the equal of any other American psycho in cinema.
