Ichi the Killer is a very controversial film, but it has received mostly positive reviews over the years and is regarded as something of a cult classic. Why has it been well-received? Working out what the infamously confusing ending of 2001: A Space Odyssey means is easier than answering that question.

The directing is headache-inducing, the plot is stupid and incomprehensible, characterization or emotional depth are non-existent, it's annoying, idiotic, shallow, vile, misogynistic, distasteful... this is one of the most incompetent and messy movies you'll ever watch and a huge misfire for Takashi Miike, the film's talented director, yet somehow this has been completely let off by many reviewers.

The positive reviews for this one are just completely inexplicable. In fairness, it is a shocking film and kind-of interesting to watch because of how different it is, but that still doesn't make it a competent film.
