1. King Kong

If we're talking all-time cinematic landmarks whose impact cannot be overstated, and which remain endlessly rewatchable even after many decades and many more rip-offs: well, stand to one side, Star Wars.

RKO's original King Kong marks its 85th anniversary this year, and it remains one of the most powerful, influential cinematic visions ever created. So often, particularly for younger viewers, watching early talking films feels like a history lesson: but this classic, with its primal jungle setting, iconic giant ape, damsel in distress Fay Wray, dinosaur brawls, and epic Manhattan finale is every bit as thrilling today as it must have been on release.

It's inspired umpteen clones, not to mention its various sequels and remakes, up to and including 2017's Kong: Skull Island - but nothing can overshadow the one that started it all. It's the blueprint for all monster movies, yet it's so much more: it's the epitome of big screen fantasy, a timeless testament to the unique powers of cinema. And above all else: boy, is it fun to watch, over and over again.

Endlessly repeatable quote: "It was beauty killed the beast."
