15 Most Shocking Moments In Found Footage Movies
1. Pretty Much Everything - The Poughkeepsie Tapes
The Poughkeepsie Tapes became notorious in 2007 for being the scariest movie the industry didn't want you to see. Slated for a theatrical release from MGM but later shelved indefinitely, stories began to spread about the movie being too terrifying - too offensive - to actually be seen.
While that's not entirely true, the flick does deserve the reputation it's gained for being one of the most batshit, button-pushing found-footage movies ever made. About the police's search for a prolific serial killer, the killer leaves behind hundreds of home-made tapes that captured every single murder, each more violent and disturbing than the last.
Unlike other movies in the genre which only sort of evoke the visual style of real camcorders, The Poughkeepsie Tapes genuinely looks and feels like a snuff film, with the presentation doing a lot of the heavy lifting.
That's not to say the content itself isn't shocking, as between a woman having the decapitated head of her husband sewn into her tummy to extended sequences of a presumed-dead woman being treated like a slave in the killer's basement, this terrifying flick is practically a greatest hits run through of every horrific scenario you could possibly think of.
