Rumours swirled in 2016 that Steve Rogers would meet his end in Captain America: Civil War, since in the comic he took a bullet from Crossbones. The film ultimately didn’t go the hero killing direction, but Warner Bros on the other hand finally scratched their “Death Of Superman” itch with Dawn Of Justice.

It was widely known that Doomsday would appear during the finale, but it felt a little early in the DCU to adapt such the iconic Superman demise. DC proved they're not messing around, though, and Superman indeed sacrifices himself to take down Doomsday, who in turn plunges a sharp claw into his heart.

While it was still a shock, the sting is taken out somewhat with the knowledge there’s no way in hell he’s staying dead, which the film foreshadows with the floating dirt before the credits roll.
