Many horror films play off the idea of something scary happening while you're sleeping. After all, that's when you're most vulnerable, and it's creepy to imagine someone or something standing over the bed while you can't defend yourself. This brilliant scare from the first V/H/S has got to be one of the most effective in this category. 

The moment takes place during the segment Second Honeymoon, in which a couple, Sam and Stephanie, records themselves on vacation. It takes a while to get going, but then this part comes out of nowhere to shock you to the core. The camera turns on in the middle of the night pointed at Sam sleeping, and at first that doesn't seem too weird, as the two have been recording practically everything they do. Earlier Sam tried to make a sex tape with Stephanie and she refused, so maybe she's waking him up because she changed her mind.

Then the camera slowly pans to the right, and Stephanie is sleeping in bed too. Your heart drops as you realize a third person is in the room with them filming, and they have no idea. Because the rest of the segment feels so authentic, it's a raw and terrifying reveal that thrives not on anything supernatural, but rather on an intruder being in your room in the middle of the night.
