15 Most Terrifying Horror Film Moments Of The Decade (So Far)
11. The Lightbulb (Oculus)
It's always refreshing when a movie can frighten you in a way you've never seen before, and Mike Flanagan's Oculus manages to pull that off. Here's another film where an inanimate object is able to mess with people's heads, and that leads to some great sequences that are unsettling without needing loud music.
In Oculus, Kaylie tries desperately to prove a mirror is haunted, and the thing is constantly warping her reality to either harm her or scare her away. The greatest moment is this one where she changes a lightbulb while eating an apple. Kaylie puts the fruit down and then the lightbulb right next to it, and as she starts walking away, she takes a bite. Suddenly, you hear glass breaking, and you realize she actually took a bite out of the lightbulb. Her hand begins to shake as she looks down at the bloody, broken bulb, her mouth quickly fills up with blood, and she pulls out a giant shard that was lodged inside.
Except no, she really did bite the apple, and the entire thing was an illusion. Aside from just the creepiness of this entity getting inside your head, it's hard to look at eating an apple the same way again after seeing Oculus, and it's one of the rare movie scares that is horrifying, brutal, and truly unique.
