15 Most Terrifying Horror Film Moments Of The Decade (So Far)

Sometimes sound design can make or break a horror film, and in the case of Evil Dead, it's nearly 100% of the reason one of the best scenes works so well. In this moment from the underrated 2013 remake, Olivia has been possessed by the force invading the house, which is depicted in a really unique way as she's walking across the room only to freeze dead in her tracks. She looks in a mirror and it shatters, and when Eric approaches to investigate, he hears the most awful sound imaginable. 

What is it? It sounds like some sharp object cutting through an unknown material, and as Eric approaches and sees Olivia hunched over, it dawns on you what you're hearing: Olivia is using a piece of glass to slice her own face off. The sound is unforgettable and truly disgusting, and it's a slow build until she turns around and reveals her face with mangled skin hanging off. From there she attacks him, and things only get more brutal as Eric is forced to rip out a needle from the flesh under his eye. 

While the scene is partially shocking just for the gore, what's most memorable is that horrible slicing sound, which instantly turns a good scene into a great one.
