15 Most Underrated Movies Of 2016
9. Nerve
A teen-oriented thriller about the dangers of all-consuming online cultures that actually isn’t half bad? Who’d have thunk it? Well considering the directors behind Nerve are Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost, the same minds behind the critically acclaimed 2010 documentary Catfish, it shouldn’t be too surprising that their internet themed thriller is a cut above similarly themed films like Chatroom and Unfriended.
Starring Emma Roberts and Dave Franco as a pair of young ‘uns who get entangled in a mobile gaming app in which users are challenged to do increasingly dangerous dares for increasingly large amounts of money, the movie makes no bones about its admittedly rather obvious social commentary. But whereas a lesson about the pitfalls of the internet can often come off as trite, in Nerve it’s done with such style, innovation and knowledge of social media that it results in a genuinely enjoyable techno-thriller. Ignore those middling reviews: it’s actually a smart, engaging little film.
