Much like Tag, The Spy Who Dumped Me was just thrown in the same critical bucket as the dozens of lousy, low-effort studio ensemble comedies dumped in cinemas this past year, but it had far more to offer audiences than that.

For starters, despite most similar movies being shot with all the cinematic flair of a toothpaste commercial, this film actually looks great. The over-the-top action sequences are directed with kinetic skill by Susanna Fogel, and are proof enough that she could handle a serious, straight-up action flick.

The humour is more hit-and-miss, yes, but Kate McKinnon's go-for-broke performance props the material up at all times, and as silly as it gets, everything's always shot through with the film's tongue lodged firmly in its cheek.

Not a great movie but solid entertainment all the same, and far better than the reviews or box office would suggest.
