15 Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movies Of All Time
8. Her
Spike Jonze is the master of the ludicrous when it comes to film-making and he struck absolutely gold with 2014's Her. The problem with Jonze's propensity for the absurd is it has a tendency to cut his brilliant films off from the mainstream and that's exactly what happened to Her.
While unoriginal and low quality fare like Transformers pulled in the punters, Her's theatres remained sadly empty for the most part in comparison. A shame for those who missed out because Her is a beautiful film full of stunning performances. Much more than just a sci-fi film, Her is one of the most endearing romance films ever made. Joaquin Phoenix's relationship with Scarlett Johansson's operating system never feels unrealistic or ridiculous, it feels authentic throughout. Even despite it scooping up a deserved Oscar for its stunning script, that still feels like paltry fare for a film of Her’s quality.
Her is a film about love and the barriers that we overcome to achieve it and it is a genuinely innovative look on such a broadly discussed theme. Perhaps the greatest modern rom-com, as well as being a brilliantly written and original piece of science fiction. Her is a genre bending masterpiece that not enough people had the pleasure of experiencing.
