Duncan Jones' long-awaited passion project Mute was one of 2018's most disappointing failures, but at least Jones' sci-fi thriller had the good sense to be an intriguing and ambitious dud.

Beautifully shot and well-acted by Alexander Skarsgård, Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux, Mute takes a bleak dive down a mind-bending rabbit-hole, and its more nauseating subplots are likely to turn off those expecting a more typical, Blade Runner-esque tech-noir.

The tone is all over the place here and at 126 minutes long it outstays its welcome by a good 20-or-so, but it's at least trying to be different, and takes some pretty gnarly narrative detours in the process.
