10. The Full Monty
Set in Sheffield, The Full Monty follows a motley crew of Yorkshiremen (plus one well-endowed Scouser appropriately nicknamed ‘Horse’) who have recently been made redundant from their steel mill jobs and devise a cunning plan to make some money by forming a Chippendales inspired all-male striptease act.
Though the subject matter was often gritty – unemployment, mental health, fathers’ rights, impotence, urban decay and the like – the warm-hearted comedy was the surprise hit of 1997. It made a massive $258 million on a tiny budget of just $3.5 million and finding many a fan outside of its homeland, even if some American audiences needed leaflets translating the movie’s Northern slang to understand what the hell was going on.
Granted, it isn’t quite on Magic Mike’s level when it comes to aesthetics and dance ability and you’re more likely to see dad bods than rippling abs but it is regularly hailed as one of Britain’s best films. And thankfully its titular full monty scene isn’t full-frontal.
