What Everyone Says About It: "Like all of the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, it's an overblown mess of CGI and thoroughly forgettable plotting, attempting to skate by on Johnny Depp's eccentric portrayal of Jack Sparrow, and going by the huge box office takings, pretty much succeeding. The bloated, over-budgeted Hollywood blockbuster at its worst." Why It Isn't Terrible: Excessive though the later sequels are, Dead Man's Chest is actually a rock solid sequel which amps up the crazy visual effects-driven set-pieces, and gives Depp another chance to steal the show before his antics had become predictable and lazy. It's definitely too long, but as thrill-a-minute, escapist entertainment, it totally works, and who can forget the mind-blowingly impressive Davy Jones visual effects (which many at the time mistook for practical effects)? Audiences seem to agree on its merits, because the film grossed a franchise-high of $1.07 billion.
