15 Predictions For 2014 Movies Everybody Got Wrong
5. Paddington Will Lose The Essence Of The Character
The Prediction: The early trailers for Paddington focused on gross-out gags including ear wax but failed to depict the dignified charm of the character. There was little doubt this was going to be another big-budget ruination of a beloved children's icon. The Reality: Against overwhelmingly negative expectations, Paddington was actually every bit as charming as its trailers suggested it probably wasn't. Ben Whishaw gives a superb performance as the titular bear, and though the movie does feature its share of silly visual gags, it never loses sight of the distinctly British essence of the character. In short, you'd need a heart of stone not to be charmed by the marvelous digital wizardry on display here (not to mention the fine live-action performances from Sally Hawkins and Hugh Bonneville in particular), a testament to not judging a film by its trailer.
