4. Terence Fletcher - Whiplash
I'd struggle to call him an antihero: he is just downright bad.
J.K. Simmons plays the starring role of Fletcher, a world renowned conductor and tutor at the Shaffer Conservatory. Acting as the leader of the band, Fletcher refuses to accept even the smallest of mistakes from any member of his troop, berating them and even becoming physically violent is the mistakes are too frequent.
His latest student and drummer, Andrew (played brilliantly by co-star Miles Teller), is very clearly passionate and dedicated, even attempting to perform in the direct aftermath of a car crash in which he had been left injured, but when he struggles to perform because of this, Fletcher does not hesitate in dismissing him from the stage.
The two share an altercation resulting in Andrew's parents wishing to pursue a legal case against the conductor, the result of which being Fletcher's termination from the school. Fletcher justifies his teaching methods, claiming that the next prodigy would not be deterred by his over-the-top reactions.
The film closes with Fletcher having found that prodigy in Andrew, with the message seeming to be that Andrew's desire to prove Fletcher wrong is exactly what Fletcher wanted, and the conductor has now found vilification for his abusiveness.
Whilst not a particularly bright ending, the unrelenting fury of Terence Fletcher will live on.
