15 Recent Movies We're Not Surprised Sucked
8. X-Men: Dark Phoenix
Much like The New Mutants, the subsequent (and final) X-Men film, 2019's Dark Phoenix was also a film that most accurately predicted would suck. After all, if there's one movie from the last few years that felt like it was sent out to die, it's Dark Phoenix.
Once again, it was a troubled production. The movie was meant to lead to further sequels but, once Disney acquired Fox and further sequels were cancelled, it had to be hastily re-edited into a standalone film. Furthermore, with the X-Men soon to be joining the MCU, it was clear audiences would struggle to get invested in this, and Fox spoiling a major character death in the trailers shows just how little confidence they had in Dark Phoenix.
In the end, the film was even worse than feared and stands as easily the worst mainline X-Men film of all; a badly-written, visually flat and stunningly dull slog that does such a poor job of wrapping things up that it deserves to be named among the worst franchise endings ever.
Hell, comparisons to the final season of Game of Thrones (which came out around the same time) would be more than justified here.
