Though 26-year-old Bill Skarsgård was eventually cast as Pennywise the Dancing Clown in Stephen King's It and did an absolutely splendid job, the part very nearly went to the superb Hugo Weaving instead.

Weaving is a particularly fascinating finalist for the role because he has plenty of experience working under disguises (V for Vendetta, Captain America: The First Avenger) and is closer to the age that Tim Curry was in the original It adaptation.

However, it seems like the new It vision was always tending towards a younger actor playing the part, as Will Poulter was originally cast when Cary Fukunaga was first set to direct the horror film.

Reports suggest that Skarsgård won the part over Weaving primarily because he managed a stronger balance of creepy and playful, whereas Weaving's turn was just plainly creepy.

It sure would've been interesting to see, but having witnessed Skarsgård's astounding work in the role, it's hard to imagine anyone doing much better.
