15 Stupid Star Wars Movie Mistakes You Probably Missed
7. Power Cord Attached To Lightsaber - A New Hope
George Lucas created one of the most iconic weapons of all time by using an old filmmaking technique.
The effect was largely achieved by coating a thin wooden tube with reflective material and shining bright spotlights onto it in order to make it appear fluorescent. They then used film filters in post-production to make that effect seem substantially more pronounced and to add colouring.
Such a simple technique helped bring George’s creation to life and made the Star Wars Universe feel all the more real. That is, unless, you had an eagle eye on what was going on around the lightsabers. Then the illusion may have been broken for you.
Due to the restrictions in technology at the time, a power cable needed to be attached to the lightsaber in order to keep the spotlight on. This was not edited out during post production, meaning you can see the power cables attached to Obi-Wan and Luke’s lightsabers as they handle them in the film.
Although we do appreciate the work put into making the lightsabers look real for the film, this mistake can break your immersion during Obi-Wan's intense duel with Darth Vader.
