The Bad

Despite how long Adam Sandler has been on a slippery slope, The Do-Over is a new low. Somehow. It is a cruel, bitter, unfunny 'comedy' that contains all of the hallmarks of a Sandler 'classic' including hate-inducing main characters, ill-judged gross out gags and outdated sexism aplenty.

It's woeful, Sandler is woeful in it too and whoever thought David Spade could be a star lead in 2016 deserves to be fired. Out of a cannon. Onto the moon.

How It Improves Punch-Drunk Love

Surprisingly we have a version of Adam Sandler that is not repugnant thanks to Paul Thomas Anderson's bizarre, almost-a-musical romance tale Punch-Drunk Love.

As the lead, Barry Egan, Sandler drops the machismo aggression and general douche-baggery and is replaces it with an endearing (if a bit crazy) human being. And Punch-Drunk Love is a peak into an alternate reality where Sandler can not only act, but can choose interesting projects and even be likeable in them.

In fact, the genuine delight of Sandler in Punch-Drunk Love is so good it makes his entire back catalogue worse by association.
