15 Truly Terrible Villainous Performances From Awesome Actors

5. Toby Stephens - Die Another Day

Gustav Graves Die Another Day

Is Gustave Graves the worst James Bond villain of all time? He's certainly up there. As a hammy upper-class Brit who's actually a North Korean that's gone through surgery, he's easily the stupidest in the franchise's history anyhow.

Toby Stephens, the son of Maggie Smith and Robert Stephens, is usually a good actor. He doesn't do many films but has had a successful career on stage and TV, with his brilliant recent work in BBC's And Then There Were None standing out. His talent is evident, but this performance in Die Another Day is simply hideous.

Bond villains are hard to get right. Some play it straight but due to how ridiculous most Bond villains are hamming it up is usually better. Unfortunately, Stephens goes too hammy and ends up screeching his way through the film in a thoroughly immature manner. He couldn't be less menacing if he tried and when Graves is finally killed by Bond, it's a huge relief.

Still, he's not alone. No-one came out of this truly horrendous Bond film, which was so bad it caused the franchise to reboot, with their dignity intact.
