With the modern focus on franchises, spin-offs and prequels to spin-offs cinema can feel a little samey and safe. Movies are either tiny budget indies that don’t get a huge release or gigantic budget spectacles, with very little variety in-between.

This lack of personality can be a little depressing for film fans, who long for something with a bit more personality, or downright weirdness. On that front 2016 wasn’t a bad year, with any number of wild indies and even a few blockbusters that let their freak flag fly.

Truthfully, most of them weren’t so hot, either being so kooky they’re downright annoying, or they’re just not that entertaining on their own terms. Still, in a cinema environment devoid of personality, it’s nice to have the occasional weirdo to keep things fresh.

With that spirit in mind, here are the weirdest movies of 2016, and just what makes them so “special.”

In a way, we should be thankful a big budget movie so downright weird as Gods Of Egypt can still get made. This fantasy epic features a story where a sun god prevents a giant space worm eating the planet - every night - and Gerard Butler plays a hammy villain who also transforms into a CGI monster that would look dodgy on PS1 era graphics.

It’s sheer insanity, but the real tragedy is it’s not much fun. It’s stilted and kind of dull for the most part, with one-dimensional heroes and weirdness for the sake of it. Again it’s kind of incredible a studio thought sinking tens of millions into it was a great idea, and maybe if it had been more fun it could have worked.

It could evolve into a future cult favourite, but it’s definitely not the franchise starter it was designed to be.
