15 Weirdest Movies Of 2016
14. Suicide Squad
While it hardly attracted glowing reviews, even the most ardent critics of Suicide Squad had to give it points for being unique. It's a pulpy, colourful comic book movie that unites a cast of freaks and misfits against ancient gods who turn a city into blueberry zombies; which is to say nothing of Jared Leto’s unhinged gangsta Joker.
David Ayer – director of macho action movies like Fury and Sabotage – was hardly the conventional choice for a mainstream blockbuster, so the odd touches he brings to the characters and action make it stand out. It doesn’t always work and it feels stitched together in places, but it’s so damn weird it’s never dull.
It’s a movie featuring an Aussie villain with boomerang knives, a Japanese warrior who traps spirits in her sword, a crocodile man and the heart of an ancient creature being carried around in a briefcase; generic it most certainly isn’t.
