9. Piranha 3DD

In the hilarious and entertaining '80s B movie tribute Piranha 3D, Alexandre Aja understood not to take the humor over the top. He realized it would all be funnier if he played it straight and wasn't constantly winking at the camera. That rule was completely abandoned with Piranha 3DD, a cheap sequel which is constantly hitting you over the head with how wacky it is. Girls in bikinis run in slow motion and their boobs jiggle! Ving Rhames has robot legs! Isn't this all just so goofy? Piranha 3D was stupid in an endearing way, but Piranha 3DD just feels cynical, as if it thinks throwing a bunch of zany things at the audience is all we need to be entertained. The first film was also very well shot for something like this, but parts of Piranha 3DD are borderline incomprehensible. The CGI looks awful too, whereas all the kills in the original were great, and many were accomplished with practical effects. The ending, in which the piranhas suddenly grow legs, was clearly meant to be another example of over the top humor, but it just feels uninspired. After a successful first entry, this was more than enough to kill the franchise for good.
