Batman fans were super psyched with the news there would be an animated version of The Killing Joke, the most acclaimed of the Joker stories. This version would even be R-rated and feature Mark Hamill voicing the character, so there’s no way it would be a crushing disappointment; right?

Sad to say it was, with stiff animation and a lack of flair. The biggest issue with fans was a new prologue with Batgirl, which was supposed to show her in her prime before Joker cripples her. In theory, this segment should fleshed out her story, but it makes her look like a needy girlfriend obsessing over Batman.

This leads to a scene where they have angry sex on a rooftop, an addition that many fans and critics found completely absurd. The opening segment, in general, was quite pointless, but this scene makes it come off like creepy fan fiction.
