15 Worst Movie Moments Of 2016
8. The Twist That Renders The Original Pointless - Now You See Me 2
Now You See Me is a series built on misdirection and trickery, but the twists are usually something the movies pull out of their a**. In the original, it was revealed Mark Ruffalo’s FBI agent who was actually a secret member of the group the whole time.
His character had been working to put Morgan Freeman’s magic debunker in prison for his role in the death of his father, but in keeping with the spirit of the series, the sequel completely rewrites that. It turns out Freeman is a secret member of a society of magicians and was a good friend to Ruffalo’s father, and wasn’t responsible for his death.
This twist is meant to be a real rug pull, but it sucks because A) it’s handled poorly and B) it renders most of Ruffalo’s actions in the original utterly meaningless. Apparently, the filmmakers didn’t care about that, so why should we?
