Worst Films Of 2015 So Far
Columbia Pictures

Rotten Tomatoes: 30%

Perhaps a controversial choice for some, but Chappie qualifies quite comfortably as one of the biggest disappointments of the year so far.

What starts as a good idea is hampered by a horribly uneven tone that puts it somewhere between the sugary sentimentalism of Short Circuit and something distinctly more cynical and more hyper-violent. It struggles also because it essentially feels like a 1980s sci-fi lost in time - mostly because it's cobbled together from bits of other vaguely familiar films.

It's ironic that a film that relies so heavily on Frankenstein imagery would be so hastily knitted together, and the results so monstrous. But by far the most calamitous decision was casting Die Antwoord's Ninja and Yolandi as basically themselves, as well as soundtracking the film with their "acquired taste" music. Those were gambles that only reinforced the garish, cartoonish tone
