Idea for film: Nic Cage plays a shaggy-haired aging warrior whose assistance is called by war-weary Hayden Christiansen to help protect the heir to the Imperial chinese throne. Nobody will question why the two heroes aren't Chinese, don't worry. Or why they're Nic Cage or Hayden Christiansen. And it's directed by a stunt man.
Someone greenlit that pitch.
So it's not really surprising that the resulting film was a mess without character development or really much of a sense of plot. You'd think that something so consciously entwined in 12th century Chinese politics might make some attempt at complexity, but stunt man Nick Powell's background bleeds disdainfully in his imbalance approach to story-telling and dumb runs unchecked through the streets.
As a final insult, Cage's moments of lunacy are the only things of any merit. That such an extreme is needed for signs of life is a rather damning evaluation.
