16 Delayed 2021 Movies That Were Actually Worth Waiting For

7. Free Guy

No Time to Die Daniel Craig
20th Century Studios

With a premise that could've easily gone wrong and fairly unspectacular marketing, Free Guy looked set to be a forgettable comedy flick from Disney but as with several of the other films on this list, it was great to be wrong. Free Guy became a considerable box office smash - which is especially impressive considering that it wasn't based on any existing IP - and oh boy, was it deserved.

Free Guy is an absolute delight. It was so much smarter, funnier and more inventive than anyone predicted and with its array of wickedly smart gags, excellent plot beats, superb performances (particularly from Taika Waititi) and razor-sharp plot twists, Free Guy became one of the most infectiously enjoyable films of the year.

From the trailers it looked frivolous and style-over-substance, but that was another way in which the film subverted expectations for it is actually really rather touching and filled with heart-warming messages.

The main gripe you're likely to have with Free Guy is that it didn't come out in 2020 as originally planned. After all, it was the wholesome and uplifting movie the whole world needed during that dreadful year.
