16 Fantastic Films About Witchcraft (Before Harry Potter)
6. Blair Witch Project (1999)
Utilising the same 'lost footage' plot as Cannibal Holocaust, Blair Witch Project is the tale of a group of high school kids who venture into the woods in Maryland to make a documentary about a local legend about the Blair Witch. They disappear and their camera footage is shown to us as the 'real' events that happened to the characters in the woods. Blair Witch Project is a critically acclaimed film, however, viewers tend to be polarised into really loving it, or else despising it. Personally, I found the film to be very scary although the shaky hand camera work made me feel rather nauseous. I think that the film is suspenseful in gradually bringing the horror in the film to life. The high school kids start out as being mildly freaked out escalating to outright terror as the malevolent forces of the Blair Witch are brought into life. Whenever the camera focused on the guy standing in the corner at the end of the film, I was so scared, I was practically levitating in the cinema. It is probably the first film that was a hit due to internet hype and interest. From a $500,000 budget, it recouped $248 million dollars in worldwide box office sales. The film was therefore a spectacular success and is probably one of the most iconic films about witches. There was a Blair Witch sequel but the less we talk about that the better..
My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
